yugen’s third entry, laurine, arrives courtesy of los angeles-based producer and these things take time label-head b. hayes. at just 22 years old, hayes has packed remarkable perspective into this immersive deep-house four-tracker. it’s the work of a true participant. as if hayes work as a dj, producer, and label owner wasn’t enough, he has also put in time as a diy party promoter (he threw the beloved like i, love u parties that used to go down in the chinatown area of chicago) and a production assistant at chicago dance institution smart bar. the sum of all these parts is hayes impeccable ability to balance functionality with sonic taste.

“cliché’s principle” exhibits the two-sided aura of an artist long familiar with the cultivation of diy ethos: an effortless expulsion of playful immediacy and the unfolding of a musician well versed in unpretentious composition. lucy cliché’s five track ep for fleisch records is a jacking romp through 120-125bpm electro/new-beat, swooning through downcast ambience, lobotomised vocal samples and sweat-drenched hardware rhythms.
lucy’s musical oeuvre piles high, as a figure in the sydney underground for the past 15 years she has always explored sounds that playfully antagonize the status-quo, the dysfunctional no-wave approach of her band naked on the vague and the manipulated tape ambience of half high echo throughout cliché’s principle in the form of chorus buzzed synth chords, abstract drones and ethereal evocation. while there is the strong presence of a live veteran at work behind the machines, cliché’s principle holds five tracks produced purely with the intention of paving the dance-floor.

after keeping an eye on shan as a desired candidate for a while now, we proudly announce to launch his latest release via footjob. his records on running back, beats in space & the healing company during the last 5 years were critically well received and put him on the musical map - a highly gifted producer who’s capable of going into many directions. his “filterjob ep” takes us back to the golden era of sample house. driving beats combined with filtered disco melodies never get out of style. if anyone it’s shan who’s able to play with this type of sound and manages to deliver three superb dance floor bangers in filterjob, on & on and serious. to rounds things up, the ep finishes with a raw and dusty deep house banger called ruff draft pt.2

the elusive producer nortasun hasn’t released a record since his debut one through saft back in 2016. after two years, it’s time for a follow up which is fittingly named “two”. the track titles also resume in a fashionable manner with the opening track being titled: “untitled 3”. on this track, nortasun introduces a firm rhythm that is supported by the impossibly beautiful strings that serve as the tracks key element and appear throughout. next up is the antonzap remix. antonzap doesn’t do the stereotypical remix take on the original. his version is dub laden, otherworldly, and only implements miniscule pieces from the original take. with just under 7 minutes, the remix version is a true sonic voyage.
on the b-side, nortasun takes a more dubbed out approach to modern day house music. “untitled 4” is a work of precision. the carefully crafted hats and dub elements sizzle throughout the entire track and help the track morph into a stunning piece of dance floor music around the four minute mark. nortasun cleverly introduces a thumping bass that changes up the mood for the entire work.

this is a reissue of a short-lived and obscure uk dance music label. a compilation of tracks featured on releases across 3 ep’s between 1991 and 1993 incorporating recently emergent dub techno and progressive acid house sounds. nation of noise was conceived in the early 90 s, following a meeting of minds between the producer and ambient soho mainstay django, and vocalist jon martin (of pizzaman fame) at the legendary soho institution: the brain. plate 1 is a fully remastered reissue of the first nation of noise record - xes noiz, featuring 4 locked grooves. plate 2 takes two tracks off both the lockgroove and super bubble ep s. one side is smooth, after-hours deep house whilst the other reaches for two progressive, acid cuts. fully remastered.
